It’s my party

9 Aug

This past weekend was exhausting, but also a lot of fun. And it feels like I haven’t had fun in awhile, so I definitely enjoyed it. On Friday, I hung out with my little brother and his friends, Kennedy and Holt. The four of us went to the Elm Road Triple Drive-In Theatre to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Captain America. We ordered pizza, told silly jokes and ate cotton candy like it was our job. Both movies were entertaining and we had a great time hanging out.

On Saturday, it was my birthday. I turned 23. I don’t feel any older, but I began to realize how fast the years go by. Where did 22 go? I digress. In order to celebrate my big day, my best friend Erika and I went to Pittsburgh. The first stop was the Hofbräuhaus. Having been to the one in Munich, I have to say they do a great job of capturing the atmosphere. There is live music and of course plenty of beer. I ordered Sauerbraten, slow braised wine and vinegar marinated beef, with red apple kraut and mashed potatoes. It was amazing. And I topped it off with Hofbräu Hefe Weizen, an awesome Wheat Beer.

After dinner, we headed to Stage AE to see one of my favorite bands, Death Cab for Cutie. It was hot and crowded, but as usual they were amazing, and I couldn’t have asked for a better evening. Pittsburgh decided to make it even better though and celebrated my birthday with a huge fireworks display over the Roberto Clemente bridge. It was a great ending to the day.

Quick side story: Because of the distance, Sebastian couldn’t be here for my birthday, but he made sure I felt his presence. He called me first thing when I woke up to sing me happy birthday. Then throughout the day I opened little gifts from him. They included: a Kodak camera (to capture the day), a Death Cab shirt (to wear to the concert) and energy shots (so I wouldn’t be tired on the way home). He’s so sweet, and I felt very lucky to have such a thoughtful boyfriend.

Sunday was relaxing. I met my old college roomies for brunch, and we caught up on each other’s lives. Then I went back home for my family birthday dinner. We had steak, home-grown sweet corn and Dairy Queen birthday cake. When you have a summer birthday, the cake has to be from DQ.

Even though I missed Sebastian on my birthday, it was a great weekend. But this Saturday, I’m looking forward to staying at home and enjoying some peace and quiet.
