Twenty-seven

Since it’s my birthday today (yay!), I decided to take a cue from Karlie Kloss and share 27 things I’ve learned in the past 27 years.

  1. Celery will always taste disgusting to me no matter how many times I try it. But don’t be afraid to try something new. You never know what you might enjoy.
  2. I believe true love exists, but there is definitely a conscious choice involved. You choose to love someone and make it work.
  3. Sometimes it’s OK to spend the day on the couch, watching Netflix and eating your weight in Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
  4. Be with someone who can make you laugh.
  5. Your parents are smart. Really guys. Listen to them. But don’t be afraid to make decisions for yourself.
  6. You’re going to make mistakes, and that’s alright. Just don’t forget to learn something from them.
  7. Protect your skin. It’s not OK to go outside without sunscreen.
  8. Travel as often as you’re able to. There is so much to see in this world. Adventure is out there!
  9. Stop fretting about what others think. It’s your life. Do you.
  10. Start saving now, even if it’s just a little. You never know when you’re going to need that safety net.
  11. Family first. Always. Make time for the important people in your life.
  12. Get outside. Fresh air and sunshine are my cure for just about anything.
  13. Never stop reading.
  14. It’s completely appropriate for a 27-year-old to know almost every Disney song by heart.
  15. Stop looking down at your phone all the time.
  16. Take care of yourself. Get off the couch and move. Your health is important.
  17. Remove the toxic people from your life. Trust me when I say I prefer my handful of close friends versus an army of people.
  18. It’s OK to have emotions. And even more OK to show them.
  19. Sometimes people just aren’t going to like you.
  20. Your taste in music doesn’t define you, and it doesn’t make you better than others. 1D is my jam y’all.
  21. Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It’s not cool to be judgmental all the time.
  22. The golden rule is a good rule of thumb. Treat others how you would want to be treated.
  23. Money is better spent on experiences rather than possessions. You can’t take all those things to the grave with you.
  24. Sleep is important.
  25. Be direct about what you want and need.
  26. Growing up on a farm was hard work, but it also turned me into a hard worker.
  27. Life is beautiful, even the really messy parts.

Taking time off

8 Aug

Hello there friends! I know it’s been a while – totally my fault. I decided (without even saying anything… oops) to take some time off from blogging. I wasn’t sure if this was something I wanted to continue doing, but after some serious reflection, I decided I’m not ready to give it up yet.

Not to sound whiny, but blogging is VERY time-consuming. But it’s also something I really enjoy, so let’s continue documenting my life, okay? Okay. (The John Green fans will get that reference).

Are you wondering what I’ve been up to this summer? In between work and a couple awesome trips, I managed to book every weekend with some sort of plans, which made the months absolutely fly by. I can’t believe it’s already August… oy vey!

At least I can say it’s been a fun summer so far!

I attended a couple of Indians games with the fam. I’m not a huge baseball fan, but the games are always a blast. Throw in dollar hot dog night… I rest my case.

I participated in the Cleveland Electric Run with my friend Carlee. It was the most expensive photo opportunity, because you don’t really run, but we had a great time. We killed it with our dance/run moves.

I attended my first ever NASCAR race thanks to a work trip. This was something I never wanted do, but it turned out to be an amazing experience. Hang out in the pit at a NASCAR race. Put it on your bucket list.

I haven’t been to Cedar Point in years, but I made it there for a day this summer. What a cool place. Seriously, how lucky am I that one of the best amusement parks is close enough for a day visit? Damn lucky.

Have you ever taken a painting class? I went to one with a couple of girlfriends and we had an absolute blast. Using your creativity and drinking wine? Yes please.

I celebrated my 26th birthday this week, and it was such a lovely day. I seriously can’t wait for the year ahead – have a feeling it’s going to be a good one.

And summer isn’t over yet! I still have many weekend plans in August and more travels to share, so stay tuned :-)

Twenty five

6 Aug

Today is the day, the big 2-5. I’m officially in my mid-twenties. I know I’m supposed to be all freaked out that I’m OLD and begin planning my quarter-life crisis, but I just don’t feel that way. Sure there are things I would change if I could, and Lord knows there is always room for improvement, but that’s life. It’s crazy and messy and surprises you. Isn’t that what makes it fun?

Each year is an opportunity to grow and learn and make mistakes. You can take chances, try new things and go new places. And make the best memories along the way. In year 24, I attended Oktoberfest in Munich, tried kidney for the first time, rediscovered my love for reading, found a job where I’m happy and spent an afternoon under the Eiffel Tower.

And that my friends are why birthdays are so awesome – you never know what lies ahead. I’m happy to turn another year older. I’m unapologetically 25.
