How to win a turkey

29 Nov

The fire department in my hometown puts on a fundraiser every year called the Turkey Raffle. Don’t be confused by the name – they literally raffle off frozen turkeys. But it’s more fun than it sounds. The turkeys are raffled off in quick, five-minute rounds, and the winning ticket is chosen by a large number wheel. Your goal is to buy tickets before the wheel is spun at the end of each round. If you bought a ticket with the right number, you win!

Step 1: Find yourself a ticket guy.

Step 2: Buy some tickets.

Step 3: Wait for wheel to be spun to see if you won.

Step 4: Wheel is spun and winning number is announced.

Step 5 (a): You have the winning number. Go up and get yourself a turkey.

Step 5 (b): You didn’t win. Throw your tickets to the ground in frustration.

Step 6 (a): If you lost, go buy yourself more tickets.

Step 6 (b): If you won, go buy yourself more tickets. You can never have too many turkeys.

The Turkey Raffle was quite an experience, especially for our visiting friends from California and of course zee German. We had an awesome time though and walked away with no less than six turkeys. This may or may not have been why we cooked three for Thanksgiving this year. Oh well! Gobble gobble!

Days go by

11 Sep

Well hello there, mid-September. You sure came out of nowhere! Is anyone as surprised as me how quickly these last few weeks have flown by? I didn’t even realize we were in a new month.

August came and went, but there were some fun-filled days before it ended. My sister made a few trips home before her big move west. That’s right folks, Grace is heading to Eugene, Oregon, and we’re very excited for her. I’m sure there will be some trips that way in my future, especially since both my siblings have relocated out West.

Anyway, during one of her visits home, we rounded up a group of friends and headed to karaoke night. Singing and drinking turned into taking shots and plenty of laughs – and some stellar performances! My little cousin Kelsey sure can belt out a tune.

On the last day of the month, I took my dog to work. I work at an advertising agency, and we’re dog-friendly. Needless to say, I think he had more fun than I did.

Finally, I spent most of Labor Day weekend relaxing and shopping, but I did make a trip to the Canfield Fair. French fries, lemonade shakes, special people, super-sized pumpkins and ponies – doesn’t get much better than that!

{I will call him Li’l Sebastian}

Now that September is in full swing, I’m busy wrapping up things at work and preparing for another trip across the pond. I love to travel, and I’m extra excited for this trip. It feels like ages since I’ve seen Sebastian.

10 days! xoxo

P.S. My post from 9/11 last year. I think the theme still holds true today. Never forget.

Painting the rock

24 Aug

I was recently looking through old pictures on my laptop and came across a few of me and Sebastian painting “the rock.” It was one of Sebastian’s last nights before heading back to Germany and still one of my favorite memories.

The rock is located on Front Campus at Kent State University, and painting it has been a long-standing tradition for students. Greek organizations started the tradition of painting the rock in the 1930s, and since then, it’s been covered with many layers of paint.

On most days, the rock displays a fraternity symbol or sorority achievement. Sometimes it’s promoting an upcoming sporting event, and I’ve even witnessed people painting it for their engagement photos. Occasionally, though, there will be something painted on the rock that only means something to the ones that painted it.

The particular night we painted the rock, it was late and most people were downtown partying (after all, it was the night before graduation). We didn’t really have a plan as to what we were going to paint. We ended up drawing a bunch of random words on it. Sebastian painted a giant German flag. We laughed and had an absolute blast.

The following morning, I noticed our masterpiece had already been covered by some fraternity symbol, but it didn’t matter. For me, it was one of those moments where you realize how easy it is to be with the other person. And Sebastian must have felt the same way because the next night he asked me to be his girlfriend. I know, super cheesy, but if you can’t paint a giant rock together and have an awesome time, you’re probably not meant to be.

To all my Kent State peeps out there, have you ever painted the rock?

Meet Lauren

15 Jul

Remember back in June when I wrote about Christmas in July? Recently I was partnered with an awesome blogger, Lauren from Pink on the Cheek.

Lauren lives in California and blogs about everything from food to fitness to fashion. It’s been a lot of fun figuring out what I would send as a Christmas in July gift. I finally settled on a couple of items and everything is wrapped and ready to go.

I hope the gift brings a little holiday cheer. And of course, I can’t wait to see what I get too!

Christmas in July

19 Jun

The blogosphere is a wonderful place. You can learn new things, find new passions and read about some really interesting people. Seeing as I have a love for Germany (and a certain German), I often search for bloggers who write about the country – especially expats in Germany.

This year, I’ve come across some amazing bloggers who detail their life abroad. We’ve never met, but through their posts I feel more connected to the country where Sebastian lives. I even get a small taste of what my life could be like someday (if I ever make the move across the pond).

Anyway, I was super excited when Daryl from Roots, Wings, and Other Things posted about Christmas in July. What is Christmas in July, you ask? It’s a blogger gift exchange hosted by Daryl, Alyx and Cecilia! Each blogger who signs up will be paired with another blogger, and we’ll exchange gifts in July. Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love Christmas. The opportunity to bring some holiday spirit to summer is just awesome.

I love finding the perfect gift, and I’m excited to see who I’ll be paired with. But I’m even more excited to think about what my surprise present might be.

Maybe some adorable tili bags

or Essie nail polish, my favorite! I love the colors from their latest collection.

No matter what present I receive, it’s a great way to meet new bloggers and have a little fun this summer. What about you? Would you like to celebrate Christmas in July? Make sure to sign up by June 20!
