What a boss

28 Jul

My brother and I both have summer birthdays (and they’re only 10 days apart). So yes, I have a birthday coming up, but this post is all about my little brother.

Today he’s spending his birthday in basic training at the United States Air Force Academy (not exactly a fun birthday). I’ll be sending lots of good thoughts his way, and I ask you to do the same.

He finally finishes basic training on August 7. When he has internet access again, I hope he’ll get to see the picture below and have a good laugh.

Happy Birthday, Joe!

The one where we all grow up

26 Jun

My little brother leaves tomorrow for the United States Air Force Academy. We all knew he’d be leaving, but I can see my parents aren’t ready. And I’m not either. It’s a different type of feeling that’s hard to put into words. We aren’t sad he’s going. On the contrary, we’re really proud and excited for him.

I thought maybe it was because we’ll see him less often, but that’s not it either. We’ve all spent time apart at one point or another. I think what it comes down to is his departure marks a new chapter in the story of our family. This is the chapter where we all grow up.

Sure, my sister and I have been out of college a few years and both have steady jobs and steady boyfriends. But we always knew we could come back home, hang out with our little Joey and feel like kids again. Things are different now; my baby brother is an adult. Yes, we’ll still have awesome times together (and I’ll still act like a kid), but it won’t ever be like it was.

I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. In the next few years we’ll each be finding ourselves and starting our own families. It’s exciting and scary and wonderful. And that’s what the weird feeling is – change. Maybe we don’t feel ready for it, but we are.

So to Joey: Thank you for being my inspiration to dream big. You truly are an amazing person and bring so much joy to our family. Never stop following your dreams. We’ll all be rooting for you, kid.

Random Friday

14 Oct

This is the post where my sister moves back home for three months, and all five of us are back together. I never thought this day would come, but by random chance my entire family is living at home again. My brother is here because he’s still in high school, me because the rent is cheap and my sister because she took a temporary position in Ohio to be home for the holidays.

It will be nice to have all of us together, but it will also be very interesting. I foresee some sibling arguments, squabbles with the parents, and a lot of fun having everyone under one roof.

On another note, tomorrow is the big 5K I’ve been not at all somewhat training for. Even though I’m not expecting a great time, it will feel good to be running again. Here are two other things that made me smile this week.

My little brother was crowned homecoming King! We were all really excited for him, and to top it off, his football team won their first game.

The second thing is Sebastian might be coming to visit for Thanksgiving! Nothing is set in stone, but I am beyond excited. And to round out my random thoughts for the night, here’s a little quote that will get me through the race tomorrow. Happy Weekend!

I ate April

29 Apr

I was talking to my boyfriend today, and we both couldn’t believe that May 1 is this Sunday. Where did April go? Sebastian claims he ate it, but I think that’s an awful lot for one stomach. However, if it were physically possible to eat a whole month, he would be the one to do it. In all seriousness though, the month really has flown by. I think it speaks to how busy I’ve been at work, but I can’t complain. With each passing month, I’m that much closer to my European vacation. So goodbye April!

The month of May will be filled with vacation preparations, visits from family and hopefully kinder weather. April showers bring May flowers… right? In any case, tomorrow’s forecast is calling for sunshine, and the thoughts of running outside and sunbathing make for a great Friday. To celebrate my good mood, here are some pictures from my egg coloring adventures last week.

Happy Friday! :)
