Happy birthday to me

6 Aug

Today I turn 24 years old. Unlike a lot of people my age, I’m not freaking out about getting older. In fact, I like getting older. It often feels that each year is better than the next.

These past few birthdays, I’ve started taking some time to reflect on all that I’ve done in the past year. I continue to notice how quickly time flies by. It seems like yesterday I was graduating college and in a blink of an eye, more than two years have gone by.

I have to say though, as fast as it went, year 23 was pretty great. I kicked off my birthday celebrations with a trip to Pittsburgh with my bff. I was promoted at my job. I traveled to Amsterdam, Berlin and the Dominican Republic. I ran three 5Ks and started getting back in shape. And my favorite was celebrating two wonderful years with my boyfriend. What a year.

The most important thing to note is I can honestly say I’m happy with my life right now. As fun as this past year was, there are still big things ahead, and year 24 is already shaping up to be pretty awesome. I’ll be traveling to Germany in September to spend time in Berlin and Munich. I couldn’t be more excited (47 days!!!).

So cheers to another birthday and the year ahead. I’m already looking forward to it.

It’s my party

9 Aug

This past weekend was exhausting, but also a lot of fun. And it feels like I haven’t had fun in awhile, so I definitely enjoyed it. On Friday, I hung out with my little brother and his friends, Kennedy and Holt. The four of us went to the Elm Road Triple Drive-In Theatre to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Captain America. We ordered pizza, told silly jokes and ate cotton candy like it was our job. Both movies were entertaining and we had a great time hanging out.

On Saturday, it was my birthday. I turned 23. I don’t feel any older, but I began to realize how fast the years go by. Where did 22 go? I digress. In order to celebrate my big day, my best friend Erika and I went to Pittsburgh. The first stop was the Hofbräuhaus. Having been to the one in Munich, I have to say they do a great job of capturing the atmosphere. There is live music and of course plenty of beer. I ordered Sauerbraten, slow braised wine and vinegar marinated beef, with red apple kraut and mashed potatoes. It was amazing. And I topped it off with Hofbräu Hefe Weizen, an awesome Wheat Beer.

After dinner, we headed to Stage AE to see one of my favorite bands, Death Cab for Cutie. It was hot and crowded, but as usual they were amazing, and I couldn’t have asked for a better evening. Pittsburgh decided to make it even better though and celebrated my birthday with a huge fireworks display over the Roberto Clemente bridge. It was a great ending to the day.

Quick side story: Because of the distance, Sebastian couldn’t be here for my birthday, but he made sure I felt his presence. He called me first thing when I woke up to sing me happy birthday. Then throughout the day I opened little gifts from him. They included: a Kodak camera (to capture the day), a Death Cab shirt (to wear to the concert) and energy shots (so I wouldn’t be tired on the way home). He’s so sweet, and I felt very lucky to have such a thoughtful boyfriend.

Sunday was relaxing. I met my old college roomies for brunch, and we caught up on each other’s lives. Then I went back home for my family birthday dinner. We had steak, home-grown sweet corn and Dairy Queen birthday cake. When you have a summer birthday, the cake has to be from DQ.

Even though I missed Sebastian on my birthday, it was a great weekend. But this Saturday, I’m looking forward to staying at home and enjoying some peace and quiet.

The Bliss List

5 Aug

Lately it seems like the glass is half empty. I can’t really explain it, but I’m been feeling more negative than usual. In an effort to improve my attitude, I’m going to start “The Bliss List.” Each week, I’ll be on the lookout for things that made me smile and post them in a short list.

This week I actually found quite a few things to be happy about, but I’ll limit the list to three.

Yup that’s right, my birthday is tomorrow, and I’m really looking forward to it. As I turn 23, I can’t help but look back on this past year. I traveled to Germany twice, started my career, went on my first official work trip and fell in love with a really great guy. If 22 was this great, I can only imagine what 23 will hold.

Have a great weekend!
