Dear March

1 Mar

Dear March,

I’m so excited for your arrival, I can hardly stand it! For months I’ve been stuck inside, bundled in blankets, watching the cold and dreary world outside. But today you bring such promise. The promise of longer days and warmer weather. The promise of springtime and sunshine.

And you have so many exciting things in store for me – a work trip to Phoenix, daylight saving time and a visit from Sebastian (21 days and counting).

Just in case you’re not sure, here is what I expect from you in the coming weeks…

And this:

And of course this:

That is all March. That is all.

Cleaning out the loft

1 Apr

I spent the past week and a good part of this weekend spring cleaning. My spring cleaning usually consists of reorganizing my closet, some serious dusting and washing down the walls and woodwork. This year, however, I decided to tackle my loft as well.

When my parents remodeled our home, they wanted to make use of all available space. This is how the lofts came to be. I had one and so did my brother. In each of our rooms there is a wooden ladder that leads up to a space above the ceiling. The height is only about 4 feet tall, but it was the perfect space for a kid. I used to spend hours in my loft reading or playing with my dolls.

Over time, I slowly but surely outgrew the loft, and it turned into my personal storage area. Everything I saved, or didn’t have room for, found a space in my mini attic. Fast forward to now, the loft was jam-packed with high school soccer trophies, fifth grade awards, old toys and college text books. It was time to do some serious spring cleaning.

I took everything out of the loft, wiped down the walls and vacuumed the carpet. And then began the task of going through all the items I’d saved since I was 12 years old. I found a lot of interesting things, and some I still couldn’t throw out or give away (like my Ewok pez dispenser – hello, it’s an Ewok pez dispenser). But a lot of stuff I was able to clean out. It’s OK to let go of things, because they’re just things. It’s the little moments and memories spent in the loft that I’ll have forever.

Here’s to a fresh start this spring!

Nothing like a little vitamin D

21 Mar

The weather these past few weeks has been off. Living in Northeast Ohio, I’m no stranger to weird weather –but 80 degrees in March? Normally I’m bundled up in sweaters, and this week I broke out sandals and shorts.

You won’t find this girl complaining. Bike rides in the evening and walks during lunch hour are making for a great start to spring. The birds are out, the flowers are blooming and the once gloomy landscape is starting to come alive again. My spirits are also picking up, and I know it has something to do with the extra sunshine.

During winter, it’s much harder to produce vitamin D due to the lack of sunlight. When the sun’s ultraviolet-B rays hit the skin, a reaction takes place that enables skin cells to manufacture vitamin D. Vitamin D helps us release endorphins, and endorphins make you feel happy.

Even with a busy work schedule and life’s other stresses, I can’t help but feel happy and energized. It really is true what my parents used to say: a little sun will do you some good.
